What is Glutathione? Reduced GSH, Explained
A tripeptide antioxidant your own cells manufacture — and the single word on a label that tells you whether a product is worth buying.
What glutathione is
Glutathione is a small molecule built from three amino acids — glutamine, cysteine and glycine — produced naturally in every cell of the body. It is one of the body's principal intracellular antioxidants, and its levels are influenced by age, diet and lifestyle. In food, small amounts occur in asparagus, avocado, spinach and okra, though dietary glutathione is largely broken down in digestion.
Reduced vs oxidised: the word that matters
Glutathione exists in two states: reduced (GSH) — the active antioxidant form — and oxidised (GSSG), the spent form. Quality supplements state “reduced glutathione” or “GSH” explicitly with the milligram amount. A label that just says “glutathione blend” without the reduced designation or a clear dose is a red flag. Ours is 1200mg reduced glutathione per serving, UK made.
Glutathione vs its precursors
Some routines use precursors instead — NAC (N-acetylcysteine) and glycine supply the raw materials for the body's own production. Direct reduced glutathione and precursor approaches are both legitimate; the direct route gives you a defined dose of the finished molecule.
Where it fits a longevity stack
Glutathione typically sits in the antioxidant column of a stack, alongside an NAD+ core such as NMN. How to combine sensibly: building a longevity stack.
