NMN and Resveratrol: Why They're Taken Together
The pairing isn't marketing convention — it comes from how the two molecules are studied and how resveratrol behaves in the body.
Two molecules, two roles
NMN is a direct NAD+ precursor: cells convert it into NAD+, the coenzyme involved in cellular energy metabolism whose levels decline naturally with age.
Trans-resveratrol is a polyphenol found in grape skin and Japanese knotweed. In the longevity literature it is frequently studied alongside NAD+ biology, which is why the two appear together in research protocols and, subsequently, in supplement formulations.
Why the combination became standard
The pairing was popularised by researchers in the NAD+ field who described taking the two together, and it has since become the default longevity stack. The practical logic: NMN supplies the NAD+ precursor, while resveratrol is studied in the context of the enzymes that use NAD+ as a co-substrate. To be clear — no health claims are authorised for either compound in the UK, and combining them is a formulation choice, not a proven multiplier.
Why the trans form matters
Resveratrol exists in two isomers: trans and cis. Virtually all research uses trans-resveratrol — the stable, bioactive form. Cheaper supplements sometimes use low-purity extracts with significant cis content. A quality label states “trans-resveratrol” explicitly with a purity figure.

Trans-resveratrol is fat-soluble and poorly water-soluble.
