Is NMN Legal in the UK? Novel Food Status Explained
Regulatory positions change — this page reflects our understanding as of August 2026. Always check the FSA's own register for the current status.
Short answer: yes, NMN can currently be sold in the UK, but its long-term regulatory status isn't fully settled yet. Here's what that actually means.
What "novel food" means
Under UK food law, a Novel Food is an ingredient without a significant history of consumption in the UK or EU before May 1997. Novel Foods need authorisation from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) before they can be legally marketed as food supplements.
Where NMN currently stands
NMN falls within the scope of UK Novel Food regulation and is currently under FSA assessment rather than fully authorised. In practice, this means: products that were already on the market can generally continue to be sold while the assessment is ongoing, provided they meet standard food safety and labelling rules. This is an active, evolving process, not a final ruling either way.
Does this mean NMN could be banned?
Nobody can say that with certainty, including us. The direction of travel across UK and EU regulators has generally been toward a formal authorisation pathway rather than an outright ban, but the process is slow and the outcome for any specific product isn't guaranteed. We'll update this page if the position changes materially.
What we do about it
- We don't make disease-treatment claims about NMN, on this page or on any product page
- We keep an eye on FSA guidance and update our labelling and claims to match
- If a product's regulatory position changed such that we couldn't sell it compliantly, we'd stop selling it
Frequently asked questions
Can I still buy NMN in the UK right now?
Yes. NMN supplements remain available for purchase in the UK while under FSA assessment.
Is NMN banned in the UK?
No. It is under regulatory review, which is a different status to being banned.
Is this the same in the EU?
The EU runs a broadly similar novel food framework through EFSA. Northern Ireland follows EU rules under the Windsor Framework, while Great Britain runs its own FSA process.
Where can I check the current official status?
The FSA maintains a regulated products register and novel foods information on its own website — that's the authoritative source, not this page.
